North America is the Leading Region for Internet Users According to the Computer Industry Almanac August 18, 1999 (updated December 1999) - North America will remain the leading region for Internet users until at least 2005. It will grow from about 93 million Internet users at year-end 1998 to nearly 231 million by year-end 2005. Western Europe/Scandinavia is growing faster than North America and will be a close second by 2005 with over 213 million Internet users. The Asia-Pacific region is growing even faster and will have nearly 190 million Internet users in 2005. Internet
users are defined as adults over 16 years old with weekly usage in businesses
and homes. These numbers are 15% to 30% higher when occasional Internet
users are included for 1998.
These are results from a report by Computer Industry Almanac that estimates the number of Internet users and per capita Internet users in 50 countries from 1990 to 1999 and projections for 2000, 2002 and 2005. There will be nearly 350 million Internet users or 57.5 per 1,000 people worldwide at year-end 2000 and over 765 million users or 118 per 1,000 people by year-end 2005. North America will have 28% of the Internet users with 232 million at year-end 2005.
