Top 25 Countries with the Most Computers

November 12, 1997 - At year-end 1996 there were 305M computers in use worldwide, up from 259M in 1995. The top 25 list, as expected, consists mostly of the largest industrialized countries. The U.S. is the clear leader with over 108M computers in use or over 28% of the total. Japan is second with an installed base exceeding 23M computers. These 25 countries account for nearly 80% of the total computers in use. Over 95% of the computers in use are personal computers.

Worldwide yearly shipments of computers will surpass 80M units in 1997, but only 50%+ will add to the installed base as nearly half will be replacing existing computers. By year-end 2000 the computers in use will approach 600M units.
